Considered as the "10th must see region for 2011" by the lonely planet,  the Gilis Islands - Trawangan, Meno and Air, are located on the north west coast of Lombok. Trawangan is the largest and the most developed of the three islands.

- Main highlights: no motorbikes, great laid back beaches, delicious chicken satay (especially at Pondok Windy restaurant), good snorkeling & very friendly local people.

- How to get there from Ubud - there are lots of small travel agencies in the streets (esp. Hanoman street and main Ubud street). Bemos usually leave early in the morning to reach Padangbai. It’s about 1h30 ride and then, you can take the fast boat to reach the Gilis islands (1h30/2h). Rough transportation price: 270000 idr (one way – low season).

- Recommended hotel: Pondok Windy

Gili Trawangan - Under development

The increasing popularity of the Gilis has prompted an unprecedented surge in development that threatens to scupper conservation efforts in the long term.

Rising population and a rash of new construction is putting pressure on an island whose circumference is just 12km and which imports nearly everything, including fresh water. The capacity of septic system to cope with waste is another raising issue.

Egg Painter I met in Ubud while following the walk tour by the lonelyplanet. I had bought one of his eggs (that is actually wood) with Ganesh drawings on it. But I lost it after a few hours...So I only have these pictures as memories...
